The Certina brand’s direct predecessor, a watch movement workshop, was founded by brothers Adolf and Alfred Kurth in the Swiss town of Grenchen in 1888. The company chose the name Certina on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of its founding in 1938. At that time, the family business still had a reputation as a state-of-the-art watchmaker, which brought expansion into foreign markets. A significant milestone in the brand’s history came shortly after the interest in strengthening its position in the sports sector. It was DS – Double Security technology, which increased the watch’s durability by using a combination of sapphire crystal and additional seals on the crown and reinforced lid. The DS system has contributed to the brand’s popularity among famous athletes, which has helped make Certina the leader in the middle class of watches. Enthusiasm for sports has also been transferred to design. Robust steel cases and straps, however, they are easy to wear. Of course, the brand also offers purely elegant ladies and men’s models. Certina watches are equipped with precise quartz and mechanical movements from the Swiss ETA plant, which, like Certina, is a member of the Swatch group.
