Patek Philippe SA (French: [pəˈtɛk fəˈlip]) is a Swiss luxury watch and clock manufacturer, located in the Canton of Geneva and the Vallée de Joux. Established in 1839, it is named after two of its founders, Antoni Patek and Adrien Philippe. Since 1932, the company has been owned by the Stern family in Switzerland and remains the last family-owned independent watch manufacturer in Geneva. Patek Philippe is one of the oldest watch manufacturers in the world with an uninterrupted watchmaking history since its founding. It designs and manufactures timepieces as well as movements, including some of the most complicated mechanical watches. The company maintains over 400 retail locations globally and over a dozen distribution centers across Asia, Europe, North America, and Oceania. In 2001, it opened the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva.

Patek Philippe is widely considered to be one of the most prestigious watch manufacturers in the world. As of July 2023, among the world’s top ten most expensive watches ever sold at auctions, nine are Patek Philippe watches. In particular, Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime Ref. 6300A-010 currently holds the title of the most expensive watch (and wristwatch) ever sold at auction (US$31.19 million/31 million CHF), while Patek Philippe Henry Graves Supercomplication, the world’s most complicated mechanical watch until 1989, currently holds the title of the most expensive pocket watch ever sold at auction (US$24 million/23,237,000 CHF).

  • PATEK PHILIPPE GOLDEN ELLIPSE 5738P

An elliptical case, between a circle and a rectangle. A dial in blue gold, with gold hands and hour markers floating over its depths. When it first appeared in 1968, Patek Philippe golden Ellipse was a bold departure from traditional watch shapes. But far from bowing to fashion, this innovative watch had a sense of inner harmony that was very pleasing to the eye. Its design was inspired by the principle of the “golden section” discovered by the ancient greek mathematicians. This “divine” proportion, expressed as a ratio of 1 / 1.6180, forms the basis of some of history’s greatest works of art and architecture.

Reference 5270, launched in 2011, is heir to several generations of Patek Philippe perpetual calendar chronographs. The Manufacture reinterprets this timepiece in a model featuring an iconic yet original style. The radiance of platinum — the most precious metal of all yet also the hardest to work with — magnifies the timeless design of the case, with its concave bezel, its elegant two-tier lugs and its correction push-pieces that are satin-brushed on the flanks and polished on top.

The perpetual calendar displays are harmoniously arranged, with the date indicated by a hand and a moon phase at 6 o’clock, as well as a twin day/month aperture at 12 o’clock, complemented by two round apertures for the day/night indication and the leap-year cycle. Caliber CH 29-535 PS Q is distinguished by its traditional architecture, combined with six patented innovations relating to the chronograph, as well as by its exceptionally thin calendar mechanism.
